Parish Meadow Management

The 10 wildlife meadow areas in Pill range in size from tiny to 25 acres and include St. George’s Flower Bank.

They are looking a bit tired at the moment but they’re bursting with life. Butterflies, bumblebees and a host of smaller insects can be found.

These all provide food for all sorts of larger animals.

The most noticeable are probably the birds, especially Swifts who trawl up tiny flies and spiders high in the sky. There are bats too – not so obvious, though.

The Swifts have mostly headed back to Africa now – Summer is nearly over.

All this wildlife thrives on this ‘scruffy’ management – the ‘tidy’ areas are rather barren in comparison. With luck this management will ensure a welcome for the Swifts next Summer.

Late summer and early autumn mowing has started on the meadows to help the wild flowers thrive in amongst the grass.
